Diosdado Pangan Macapagal

(September 28, 1910 - April 21, 1997)

The 9^th President of the Philippines

v  Born on September 28, 1910 in Lubao, Pampanga

v  Father - Urbano Macapagal (a vernacular playwright.)

Mother - Romana Pangan Macapagal,( was a schoolteacher who taught catechism)

·        He was the second of four children, namely: Israel, Angel, and the youngest and only sister, Lourdes.

ü  His family earned extra income by raising pigs and accommodating boarders in their home.

ü  The Macapagal family was subject to abject poverty. Their mother would usually send them to sleep early so as not to feel the pangs of hunger for lack of food. Food was not the only thing lacking; also books and materials for school.

v  Dadong valued the importance of education despite of his economic status

v  He married twice.

·        Purita dela Rosa (1938–1943), with whom he had two children, Cielo and Arthur. She died because of malnutrition due to deprivations of the war.

·        Evangelina Macaraeg (1946–1997), with whom he had two more children, Gloria and Diosdado Jr.

v  He died on April 21, 1997 at the age of 87.

·        Cause of his death - Heart failure, pneumonia and  renal complications
